Several Tidewater Debate League member schools competed at the Winter Invitational Debate Tournament held December 5th and 6th at James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
In Student Congress, Princess Anne High School swept the field, with Caroline Wulf taking 1st-place, Tom Scott-Sharon taking 2nd, Krista O'Connell taking 3rd, and Billy Annunziata taking 4th.
In the Junior Varsity division of Lincoln-Douglas debate, Claire Pickard of Princess Anne High School took 2nd-place in competition and 5th-place speaker.
In the Varsity division of Lincoln-Douglas debate, Matthew DiNardo of Princess Anne High School took 1st-place in competition and 2nd-place speaker.
In the Novice division of policy debate, the Frank W. Cox High School team of Wesley Bittner and Cari Rand went 4-2 in preliminary competition and advanced to Quarterfinals where they defeated Briar Wood CR (Virginia) on a 3-0 decision. In Semifinals, they dropped to Woodrow Wilson ML (Maryland) on a 3-0 decision. Cari Rand also took 1st-place speaker.
In the Junior Varsity division of policy debate, the Kempsville High School team of Jade Kreissler and Ellison Turpin went 5-1 in preliminary competition and advanced to Semifinals where they defeated Stone Bridge PS (Virginia) on a 3-0 decision. In Finals, they dropped to Harrisonburg GR (Virginia) on a 2-1 decision. Jade Kreissler also took 2nd-place speaker. The Princess Anne High School teams of Julie Coursen and Helen He and Ashley Houze and Becca Wilson went 1-5 and 2-4 in preliminary competition, respectively, and did not advance.
In the Varsity division of policy debate, the Kempsville High School team of Adora Parker and Samuel Ross went 4-2 in preliminary competition and advanced to Semifinals where they defeated Cox BP on a 2-1 decision. In Finals, they defeated Princess Anne ST on a 3-0 decision. Adora Parker also took 2nd-place speaker. The Princess Anne High School team of Parth Shah and Jessica Truong went 6-0 in preliminary competition and advanced to Semifinals where they defeated Woodrow Wilson EU (Maryland) on 3-0 decision. In Finals, they dropped to Kempsville PR on a 3-0 decision. Parth Shah also took 3rd-place speaker and Jessica Truong took 4th-place speaker. The Frank W. Cox High School Team of Oliver Brass and Andrew Peterson went 4-2 in preliminary competition and advanced to Semifinals where they dropped to Kempsville PR on a 2-1 decision. Oliver Brass also took 1st-place speaker and will receive a $1,000 scholarship if he attends James Madison University. The Princess Anne High School teams of Matthew Veland and Katherine Williams and Katlyn Alley and Alex Lichtenstein both went 3-3 in preliminary competition and did not advance. Matthew Veland took 5th-place speaker. The Frank W. Cox team of Pete Galanko and Kreshmeh Khosrowani went 2-4 in preliminary competition and did not advance.
