George Mason University


Several Tidewater Debate League member schools competed at the Patriot Invitational Debate Tournament held January 9th and 10th at George Mason University in Fairfax.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Sara Wall of Princess Anne High School advanced to Octafinals, Hannah Chacon of Princess Anne advanced to Semifinals, and Matt DiNardo of Princess Anne took 2nd-place.

In the Novice division of policy debate, the Frank W. Cox High School team of Wesley Bittner and Cari Rand took 1st-place. The Princess Anne High School team of Helen He and Julie Corson took 2nd-place.

In the Junior Varsity division of policy debate, the Princess Anne High School team of Ashley Houze and Becca Wilson advanced to Semifinals.

In the Varsity division of policy debate, the Princess Anne High School team of Matthew Veland and Katherine Williams went 4-2 in preliminary competition and advanced to Quarterfinals where they defeated Pennsbury LS (Pennsylvania) on a 2-1 decision. In Semifinals they dropped to Kempsville PR on a 2-1 decision. The Kempsville High School team of Adora Parker and Samuel Ross went 4-2 in preliminary competition and advanced to Quarterfinals where they defeated LaSalle BT (Pennsylvania) on a 3-0 decision. In Semifinals, they defeated Princess Anne VW on a 2-1 decision. The Frank W. Cox team of Oliver Brass and Andrew Peterson went 5-1 in preliminary competition and advanced to Quarterfinals where they defeated Broad Run MH (Virginia) on a 3-0 decision. In Semifinals they defeated Thomas Jefferson HK (Virginia) on a 2-1 decision. A coaches' decision determined the outcome of the final round between Cox BP and Kempsville PR, with Cox taking 1st-place and Kempsville taking 2nd. Oliver Brass of Cox took 1st-place Varsity speaker and Adora Parker of Kempsville took 2nd-place Varsity speaker.
